How to Write an Introductory Email to a Prospective Coach:

Be succinct.  Coaches do not want to (and probably won’t) read a long email about how you were an All-Star in Little League.  Make it approximately three short paragraphs and craft an eye-catching subject line.  Ex. 2023, LH Pitcher, 6’2” 200 lbs, 91 MPH FB

Paragraph One:

Begin by giving them your full name, the school you are currently attending, your graduation year, and what is it about their school that interests you.  For example, do they have a strong emphasis on academics, a historically successful program, or does the school specialize in something that you are interested in pursuing?

Paragraph Two:

Mention a few of your major accomplishments, both academically and athletically related.  These could be ACT scores, GPA, All-League Honors, 4-year starter, etc.  You will also want to let them know where they can find your video package (bloodlinesports.co), upcoming schedule, and possibly your academic records.

Paragraph Three:

In the last paragraph, you will want to let them know what your next steps will be.  For instance, will you be visiting the campus, attending a game, submitting an application, or possibly planning a follow-up email and/or phone call?  Thank them for their time and end with an appropriate closing. (Sincerely, Regards, Yours Truly)

*Important:

This is the first impression, so make it a good one.  Nothing will turn a coach off more than a poorly written letter.  Be sure to reread your email several times and correct any mistakes in punctuation, capitalization, spelling, and grammar.  Refrain from using slang terms and contractions.  Your email does not need to be uber-formal, but it should be professional and convey the fact that you are detail-oriented and take the process seriously.

Sample Email:

Coach Johnson,

My name is Steven McCordy and I am currently attending Gerry High School in California.  I am a member of the baseball team and I will be graduating in 2021.  I have been following your program since my freshman year and I love the way that your teams play the game.  In doing a bit of research, I have also discovered that your school has an amazing Business program.

I am a four-year starter on Varsity and have been an All-League selection at catcher for the last three years.  I currently have a 3.8 GPA and my most recent ACT score was a 32.  My profile, upcoming schedule and video package can be found at www.bloodlinesports.co.

I am planning a visit to the campus over my spring break (March 29-April 3).  I would love to meet with you, if you are available. It would be greatly appreciated if you could reach out to me at your earliest convenience.  Maybe we could set up a time to get together.  You now have my email, and my phone number is (714) 877-7777.  Thank you for your time and good luck on the rest of your season!

 Sincerely,

 Steven McCordy
