Top 10 Questions Coaches ask Recruits:

1.      How are your grades?

This is usually one of the first questions a coach will ask.  They do not want to waste their time with someone that will not be accepted for academic reasons.  They also do not want the headache of trying to keep someone eligible.

2.      What are your strengths and weaknesses as a player?

This is not the time to be modest.  Respond confidently but do not brag.  Be specific...strong leader, good under pressure, dedicated work ethic.  No one is perfect.  Mention a weakness or two and explain how you are or plan on improving in those areas.

3.      What sets you apart from other recruits/players?

What they are asking is “What can you bring to my program?”  This is unique to you, so put some thought into your response.

4.      What other colleges are recruiting you?

Make every coach feel as though they are your top choice but you also want to let them know that you have other options. If there are other schools involved let them know and if not you can respond by just saying “I’m waiting to hear back or I have just begun the process”.

5.      What type of scholarship are you looking for?

We all want the most we can get but be honest about your financial situation.  Be sure to know the “total” cost of each school so you can accurately calculate partial scholarships, financial aid, etc.

6.      How would you describe your relationship with your current coach?

They will eventually speak to your coach if they are serious, so be honest.  They consider your relationship with your current coach as an indicator of what type of teammate you are...fair or not.

7.      What things are most important to you in a college?

This is a broad question and could relate to their offer, playing time, course of study, class size, etc.   Be honest because it does no good if you are accepted but unhappy.

 8.      Who is helping you with your decision?

Keep it simple.  They do not want to hear that 100 people are trying to influence you.  Keep it to a family member, coach and/or a trusted advisor.

9.      What are your interests outside of sports?

Most coaches and schools want players/students with other interests.  You can mention other sports played, artistic interests, technology, or other activities like painting or fishing, for example.

10.    Do you have any questions for me?

In order to make an informed decision, you need to ask questions.  Be prepared and have a list of questions handy that you would like to ask.  The following page can help you ask relevant focused questions.
